High energy fusion of martial arts, dance and acrobatics
Capoeira classes build strength, flexibility, endurance, balance and rhythm. Get in the best shape of your life and have a great time doing it! Classes are given by Graduado Russo under the supervision of Mestre Fran of Grupo Maculele.

What is capoeira?
To some, Capoeira looks like a fight and to others, a dance. Capoeira is an art form that is not comparable to any of the more traditional martial arts. Two capoeiristas enter the circle, or “roda de capoeira” and begin to move around each other with circular, flowing movements, evading each others’ kicks and attacks all while attempting to trick each other by faking movements. These players move to the rhythms of the instruments, the clapping, and the singing of those around the roda.

The origin and evolution of Capoeira is an ongoing debate. The most accepted explanation of its origin is that Capoeira evolved during the slave trade during the sixteenth century. Slaves, who were forbidden from practicing physical training, began to disguise fighting as a dance in order to enable themselves to rebel against their slave masters.

Today, the migration of this art form has taken flight and can be found in many countries outside of Brazil, especially here in the United States. Capoeira schools exist in almost every state in the country. Men and women, young and old, and people of different backgrounds have all found themselves drawn to the game of Capoeira. Its influence on Hollywood, breakdancing, and the music industry proves Capoeira’s popularity. Its style, grace, beauty, and athleticism keeps the crowds coming.

What will I be learning in class?
You will begin class by warming up, stretching, and practicing Capoeira’s base movement, the “ginga.” You will then learn solo movements and sequences that are trained with partners. As you become more advanced, you will soon start learning exciting acrobatic movements!
Classes end with “rodas”, the traditional circle where capoeiristas play the game. As you progress, you will learn the music and culture of capoeira.

Who will be teaching?
Classes are offered through Grupo Maculele and are taught by Graduado Russo under the supervision of Mestre Fran. Mestre Fran is the founder of Grupo Maculele and has trained capoeira over 30 years, opening academies in Brazil, the United States, Portugal and England.
